Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1185 to 1393, often called the "Third Rome" and the "Second Constantinople." At its heart stands Tsarevets Fortress, a medieval stronghold perched on a hill 206 metres above sea level, surrounded on three sides by the Yantra River. For over two centuries, it housed the royal palaces of Bulgarian tsars and the Patriarchal Cathedral. Explore the ruins of over 400 houses, 18 churches, Baldwin's Tower, and the Execution Rock. In the evening, the fortress hosts a spectacular sound and light show that brings Bulgaria's epic history to life.
Founded by Emperor Trajan around 106 AD after his victory over the Dacians, Nicopolis ad Istrum — the "City of Victory on the Danube" — was once the largest Roman settlement in this part of the world. Built on 30 hectares with orthogonal streets, a forum with Ionic colonnade, public baths, and its own mint producing 900 different coin types, it was a thriving cosmopolitan centre. Most remarkably, in the 4th century, Bishop Wulfila settled here with his flock and devised the Gothic alphabet, then oversaw the translation of the Bible into Gothic — the earliest document in any Germanic language and the foundation of Germanic literary tradition. The site is on UNESCO's Tentative List for World Heritage.
